Wastewater Treatment Plant Location Permit
At Geo Costa Rica, we provide comprehensive support for the processing of location permits for wastewater treatment plants before the Ministry of Health. This permit is mandatory prior to the review of construction plans for a treatment plant, ensuring that the project complies with the established regulatory and environmental requirements.

What Does the Location Permit Include?
To obtain the location permit for a wastewater treatment plant, the following requirements must be met:
- Proposed location of the area designated for the treatment system, including preliminary dimensions.
- Distance to property boundaries and existing or projected buildings within the same property.
- Proposed location of the discharge header or connection to the sewer system, if available.
- Flow direction of water bodies that cross or converge on the property.
- Location of existing or projected water supply wells within the same property.
- Location of existing wells and water sources on adjacent properties within a 200-meter radius of the treatment plant.
Options When No Sanitary Sewer System Is Available
If there is no operating sanitary sewer system, the following alternatives are available. We also handle the required permits for each option:
- Reuse: Must comply with the regulations for the discharge and reuse of wastewater.
- Soil infiltration: Requires a technical report prepared by a geology professional, which we can provide at Geo Costa Rica.
- Evaporation: Also requires a technical report from a qualified professional, available through Geo Costa Rica.
- Discharge into a permanent receiving body: Requires a discharge permit issued by the Water Directorate (MINAE).
Process and Timeframes
Once the application is submitted to the Ministry of Health, the corresponding resolution will be issued within twenty-two calendar days. If the permit is approved, it will be valid for a period of two years.
