We Conduct Soil Studies Nationwide

We apply geotechnical, hydrogeological, and environmental techniques to characterize the subsoil and support the safe design of civil works.

Geo Costa Rica Soil Studies

What are Soil Studies?

At Geo Costa Rica, we carry out soil studies using a variety of field testing methods, tailored to the specific needs of each project. These tests provide valuable information on the subsoil's mechanical, hydraulic, and engineering properties—essential for designing foundations, structures, and other civil works.

Commonly used methods include DPL (Dynamic Probing Light), SPT (Standard Penetration Test), geophysical techniques, and exploratory drilling with core recovery.

Why are Field Tests Important?

Field tests are essential in geotechnics and soil mechanics, as they provide crucial information about the subsoil’s mechanical, hydraulic, and engineering properties.

This data is fundamental for the design of foundations in structures and civil works, as well as to evaluate environmental impact and prevent geological risks.

Standard Penetration Test
(SPT)

SPT

The SPT is a test that allows the determination of key geotechnical parameters to characterize the soil. This method is fundamental for calculating the bearing capacity of shallow foundations, such as footings or slabs, and is widely used in infrastructure projects.

Dynamic Probing Light Test
(DPL)

DPL

The DPL is ideal for conducting studies in hard-to-reach areas where other methods are not feasible. It is essential for determining the bearing capacity of shallow foundations, being especially useful in terrains where a quick and reliable assessment is required.

Geophysical Methods

Geophysical Methods

Non-invasive technique that allows subsurface exploration using electrical or electromagnetic signals, identifying the arrangement and characteristics of geological layers.

Exploratory Drilling with Core Recovery

Exploratory Drilling with Core Recovery

Allows the collection of undisturbed soil samples at various depths, essential for understanding stratigraphy, designing deep foundations such as piles and piers, and evaluating the ground's capacity to support heavy loads.

Applications and Benefits

Each of these techniques allows us to perform a thorough subsoil analysis, enabling us to make precise recommendations for the design of foundations, such as:

  • Shallow foundations (footings and slabs).
  • Semi-deep foundations (rafts and box foundations).
  • Deep foundations (piles and drilled shafts).

In addition to their geotechnical application, these studies have important hydrogeological relevance, allowing us to:

  • Assess the impact on aquifers and groundwater bodies, helping to prevent contamination and overexploitation of water resources.
  • Define protection zones for wells and springs, ensuring water quality and resource preservation.
  • Identify areas with high risk of contamination from industrial or construction activity, by evaluating the movement of pollutants through the soil and toward groundwater sources.

Geological Risk Assessment

These studies also help us analyze the geological impact of project activities, identifying potential hazards such as:

  • Landslides.
  • Sinkholes or mudflows.
  • Rockfalls and other natural hazards.

With this information, we ensure that projects are carried out with the highest level of safety and sustainability, minimizing risks and optimizing land and water resource use.
