What is the Basic Engineering Study?
At Geo Costa Rica, we carry out the Basic Engineering Study, essential for obtaining Environmental Viability from the National Environmental Technical Secretariat (SETENA). This study assesses critical aspects of the terrain and its surroundings, ensuring that projects are developed sustainably and in accordance with regulations.
Components of the Basic Engineering Study:
-
Objective: To analyze the physical and mechanical characteristics of the soil in order to determine its load-bearing capacity and the geotechnical recommendations required for foundation design.
-
Application: Essential for projects such as buildings, housing, commercial and industrial structures, earthworks, landfills, docks, retaining structures, bridges, viaducts, excavations, and roads.
-
Methodology: Geotechnical surveys are carried out through prospecting or exploratory drilling, defining the number and type of tests based on the geological information of the site.
-
Additional Consideration: If the project is located on land with slopes of 15% or more, a Slope Stability Assessment is included.
Procedure and Applicable Regulations
- Geotechnical Drilling: Prospecting or exploratory drilling is conducted to obtain subsurface samples and determine their load-bearing capacity.
- Applicable Regulations: The study is carried out in accordance with the Costa Rica Foundation Code and SETENA guidelines.
- Additional Documentation: In specific cases, complementary studies may be required, such as a Slope Stability Assessment, especially in areas with steep terrain.
